End of Two

If a picture is worth a thousand words, I am afraid I don’t have enough space on this blog for all the thoughts and feelings I had tonight. After work, we took a drive out to a nursery to buy some plants for the garden and do some other small errands. It was the perfect sunny spring evening with the perfect temperature and the perfect breeze. When we got to the nursery, it was calm and the evening sun coming in through the glass lit up all the plants and flowers in the most remarkable way. Everything looked perfect and the subtle fresh smell of spring was everywhere.

After we did a couple more errands, we picked up a milkshake and we started driving home on the back roads. Listening to Taylor Swift, calmly driving through the countryside on a peaceful Monday evening, my wife put a hand on my leg and said how lovely it was to have the perfect last drive together as a family of two. She’s 39 weeks pregnant today and I smiled and thought about all the wonderful time we’ve had together. Not even over our whole relationship but in the last 4 weeks alone.

Everywhere we have gone and everything we have done there’s a feeling of it being the “last time” but while some may view this as a loss, we view it as a celebration. Like a victory lap of a successful season of life as 2 people. It’s a feeling that for quite awhile we thought we may never have. But now we’re here and it’s lovely.

There’s no photo that can capture all the feelings I had on the drive as I remembered all the delightful things we have done recently. While we will do all these things as a family of three, I have loved celebrating the end of two. We started celebrating things so far in advance that we’ve basically had one long joyous occasion to revel in together.

To sip drinks in a cafe peacefully and play Squardle together.
To cheers our cookies together as we sit on a random bench and watch the traffic drive by in another city.
To have pancakes on easter morning while playing board games.
To go to IKEA for barely a reason at all.
To go for a walk in a park.
To have special breakfasts at home while watching youtube.
To garden.
To have sushi after work.
To read in bed.
To laugh.
To take special photos that make us look incredible.
To high five each other on the way to the car after voting.
To have brunch after a midwife appointment.
To rush into the mall and share some pretzels together before we split up and go our separate ways for the rest of the day.
To spend time with friends.
To sing our favourite Taylor Swift songs.
To explore brand new restaurants.
To feed goats.
To plan our future.

To drive. On a sunny, calm, Monday evening and watch the golden light highlight every shade of green through the forests and every peak of the mountains that surround us. Smiling as we wonder if the cows understand the perfection that surrounds them and if they appreciate beautiful days too.

Life with the one you love is beautiful. The world is beautiful. I know it well as a family of two.

I’m looking forward to celebrating it as a family of three.
